Neglect – for Parents
Failure to meet a child’s emotional needs during early years leads to a child’s emotional neglect. When the needs of a child such as love, attention and support are ignored. It results in limited emotional interactions between child and parent or caregivers. Children raised by neglectful parents have poor mental health. They develop psychiatric disorders such as Depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder twice as likely to. In Adolescents neglect manifest as poor grades, substance abuse, sex addiction and suicide attempts. Parents usually adopt similar parenting styles to their parents when raising children.
Signs of Neglect

Aggressive or withdrawn behavior with parents

Anger towards parents and limited interaction

Delayed development

Speech delay

Limited social interaction

Attention deficit disorder

Low self-esteem

Lower emotional regulation- Impulsive behavior, hostility and aggression

Where to get help
Whether a child is emotionally neglected needs to be evaluated by qualified specialists. If you suspect or observe signs of neglect, report them to the authority as soon as possible For help

The Family Support Unit (FSU) is an investigative unit that handles cases involving child protection with a focus on victim support and inter-agency coordination. It encompasses the Child Safeguarding Investigations Unit (CSIU).
The CSIU forms the RCIPS’ arm within the larger Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).
