About Us
What is the Kids Helpline?
The Kids Helpline is a project created by the Alex Panton Foundation that offers educational materials on mental health difficulties, in addition to listening services by trained volunteers.
Kids Helpline Website & App
Our website is full of information on a variety of mental health topics for kids and teens, including the signs that they might be struggling, helpful coping tools, tips on how to get support, and resources available to them. We also have information for parents and educators on how to recognize if a young person in their life is struggling, how to best show up for them and get them help.
We have an iOS and Android compatible Kids Helpline app that has all the same content as our website. To increase accessibility to this content, once the app is downloaded to the device, the content is always visible, even without connection to Data or Wi-Fi.
All the content available has been peer-reviewed by members of the Alex Panton Foundation Clinical and Education Committee.
Phone line and Text line.
Our phoneline and textline is a confidential and anonymous helpline service where kids and teens can speak safely with a trained volunteer who will listen and guide them to resources available.
Our volunteers go through an intensive training to be confident and well-equipped to navigate sensitive conversations with vulnerable kids and teens. Their training will ensure all young people that access this resource are treated with respect, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
Our phoneline and textline services are available to access Thursdays – Sundays @ 3:00pm – 9:00pm.
How did the Kids Helpline come to be?
The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre (CICC) launched a Kids Helpline in 2018 to offer much-needed support to kids and teens in domestic abuse situations. Recognising the demand for a local mental health specific helpline for children and teenagers, APF sought to partner with the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre (CICC) and collaborate to expand the existing helpline with more emphasis on addressing and mitigating mental health crisis. During this development stage, it was determined that APF was more equipped to take on this initiative, and the project was fully handed over at the end of 2022. We are so grateful to the CICC for paving the way for a service such as this, and the incredible work they have done and continue to offer to our community.
APF is thrilled to have adopted and revitalised the Kids Helpline into a full project that allows for young people to speak with someone through the textline in addition to the phoneline, and includes educational resources accessible to the community through our website and app.
Clarity on Services Offered Through Kids Helpline
The Kids Helpline’s phoneline and textline will connect young people who are struggling with a trained volunteer to listen and talk them through their concerns. This means that we can increase young people’s access to free, confidential, safe spaces for immediate and preventative mental health support, and reduce the risk associated with this vulnerable population.
It is important that we make clear that the Kids Helpline does not offer therapy or replace therapeutic or clinical services in any way.
In addition to a listening service, it aims to serve as a referral channel, connecting young people and their parents, educators, or caregivers to available resources.
